RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Communication and entrepreneurship skills, which have a very important place among the 21st century skills, are among the basic skills that a midwife should have. OBJECTIVE: This study was carried out to investigate the effect of the Communication Skills Education Program on the communication and entrepreneurship skills of the midwifery students. DESIGN: This study was designed a quasi-experimental study. SETTINGS: Online. PARTICIPANTS: First grade Bachelor of Midwifery Science students (n = 117). METHODS: In this study, the Communication Skills Education Program was given to midwifery students. The Communication Skills Assessment Scale and University Students Entrepreneurship Scale were administered before the education program was implemented (pre-test), when the training program was completed (post-test), and six months after the education program was completed (post-test). Classified data were given in numbers and percentage distribution. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to determine the relationship between the variables. In order to test the significance of the difference between pre-test, post-test and follow-test the repeated measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was performed. RESULTS: The mean age of the participating students was 19.46 ± 1.74 (min. 18.0, max: 31.0) years. While 8.5 % of the students received training on communication previously, 7.7 % of the students received education on entrepreneurship previously. Statistically significant differences were determined between the scores the students obtained at the pre-test, post-test and follow-up test [F = 224.38, p = .00/F = 325.13, p = .00]. The Bonferroni test performed to find out from which tests the difference stemmed demonstrated that there was a significant difference between the mean scores obtained at all the tests. According to the analysis of the relationship between the mean scores the students obtained from the scales, there was a moderately significant positive correlation only between their pre-test mean scores. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, we determined that the Communication Skills Education Program improved the students' communication and entrepreneurship skills.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We aimed to compare the results of image-guided drainage in addition to antibiotic therapy (antibiotherapy) with antibiotherapy alone in the treatment of tubo-ovarian abscesses (TOAs) and evaluate C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in predicting the success of antibiotherapy. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 194 patients hospitalized with TOA. Patients were divided into the following two groups: those who underwent image-guided drainage in addition to parenteral antibiotherapy and those who did not undergo image-guided drainage and received antibiotherapy alone. CRP levels on the day of admission (day 0), day 4 of hospitalization (day 4), and day of discharge (last day) were recorded. The percentage of decrease in CRP levels during day 4 and the last day compared with that on day 0 was calculated. RESULTS: A total of 106 patients (54.6%) underwent image-guided drainage with antibiotherapy, whereas 88 patients (45.4%) did not undergo drainage and received antibiotherapy alone. At admission, the mean CRP level was 203.4 (± 96.7) mg/L and was similar in both groups. The mean decrease in the CRP level on day 4 compared with that on day 0 was 48.5% and was statistically higher in the group that underwent image-guided drainage. Antibiotherapy failed in 18 patients, and a statistically significant difference was observed between treatment failure and the rate of decrease in the CRP level on day 4 compared with that on day 0. According to the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, if the CRP level measured on day 4 decreased by < 37.1% compared with that on day 0, the probability of treatment failure would increase (area under the curve = 0.755; 95% confidence interval, 0.668-0.841; sensitivity, 73.6%; specificity, 60%). CONCLUSIONS: Image-guided drainage combined with antibiotherapy in the treatment of TOA has high success rates, lower recurrence rates, and lower surgical requirement, and the mean decrease in the CRP level on day 4 can be monitored at treatment follow-up. In patients receiving antibiotherapy alone, if the CRP level on day 4 decreases by < 37.1%, the treatment protocol should be changed.

RESUMO

Background and Objectives: Oxytocin induction is a known risk factor for pelvic floor disorders (PFDs). The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of oxytocin induction on pelvic floor muscles in pregnant rats. Methods: Thirty-two female Wistar rats were included and divided into four groups (n = 8). The groups were as follows: virgin group (group I)-from which muscles were dissected at the beginning of the experiment; spontaneous vaginal delivery (group II) which has delivery spontaneously; saline control group (group III) and oxytocin group (group IV). In groups III and IV, pregnancy was induced on d 21 of pregnancy, with 2.5 mU saline solution or iv oxytocin, respectively, delivered by the intravenous (iv) route in pulses at 10-min intervals for 8 h. Then, the rats were euthanized, the m. coccygeus, m. iliocaudalis and m. pubocaudalis muscles were excised and tissue samples were taken. After histological processing, the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the muscles were analyzed under a light microscope. Results: In group IV; the measurement of the horizontal dimension of the m. pubocaudalis muscles was 50.1 ± 5.4 µm and it was significantly higher than other groups (p < 0.001). In group III; the mean value of the horizontal dimension of m. coccygeus muscle was found to be 49.5 ± 10.9 µm and it was significantly higher than other groups (p < 0.009). Between-group comparisons revealed no difference in mean m. iliocaudalis muscle dimension (p > 0.05). Conclusions: As a result of our study it can say that whether oxytocin induced or not, vaginal birth is a process that affects the pelvic muscles.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The objective was to investigate the effects of interferential (IF) current stimulation on pelvic floor symptoms, prolapse stages, pelvic floor muscle (PFM) strength/endurance, quality of life (QoL), sexual function, perception of subjective improvement (PSI), and satisfaction in women with pelvic organ prolapse (POP). METHODS: The patients were randomly divided into the IF (n=13) and sham groups (n=12). Lifestyle advice was given in both groups. Active IF current was applied in the IF group and sham IF was applied in the sham group 3 days a week for 8 weeks. The following tools were used for data evaluation: pelvic floor symptom severity with the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory-20 (PFDI-20), POP with the simplified POP-quantification system, PFM strength/endurance with a perineometer, QoL with the Prolapse Quality of Life Scale (P-QoL), and sexual function with the Pelvic Organ Prolapse/Urinary Incontinence Sexual Function Scale (PISQ-12). Evaluations were made before treatment (BT), mid-term (MT, 4th week), and after treatment (AT). PSI and satisfaction were evaluated AT with Likert-type scales. RESULTS: In the intergroup comparison AT, a greater increase in PFM strength/endurance, P-QoL-role limitations, P-QoL-sleep/energy scores, PSI, and satisfaction level, and a decrease in cystocele stages were observed in the IF group than in the sham group (p<0.05). Further, there was a greater increase in PFM endurance in the IF group in MT (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Interferential current stimulation was effective in improving POP stage, PFM strength/endurance, and QoL in women with POP. IF current stimulation can be used as a complementary treatment method in women with POP.

RESUMO

Surgical excision of advanced endometriosis has been demonstrated to improve women's pain symptoms and quality of life in women in randomized placebo-controlled trials, but there is no strong evidence regarding the live birth rate. The revised American Fertility Society (r-AFS) classification for endometriosis has a limited predictive ability for fertility outcomes after surgery; therefore, EFI scoring has been advised for predicting conception after endometriosis surgery. No randomized controlled trials have investigated fertility outcomes in patients with advanced endometriosis after surgery. This study aimed to determine the outcomes of in vitro fertilization (IVF) or non-IVF treatments after conservative surgery for advanced endometriosis in patients with good prognosis Endometriosis Fertility Index (EFI) scores (>3). This prospective cohort study was conducted between April 2014 and April 2019 at a tertiary research hospital. In total, 113 women with suspected preoperative advanced endometriosis were enrolled in this study. A total of 90 women with advanced endometriosis underwent laparoscopic surgery. Fourteen patients with EFI score of ≤3 and 3 of them who had bilateral tubal occlusion were also excluded. Seventy-three women were included in this study. The remaining 30 women in the non-IVF group and 32 women in the IVF group were analyzed. The main outcome measures were cumulative pregnancy rates and live birth rates in both groups. Women who underwent IVF treatment were older than women (30 ±â€…3.41) who had non-IVF treatment (26.5 ±â€…3.07) after laparoscopic surgery (P < .001). The remaining baseline characteristics of the patients in both groups were similar. Clinical pregnancy, abortion, and live birth rates were similar in both the groups after 36 months of follow-up. This study demonstrated that cumulative pregnancy and live birth rates were similar to those of non-IVF or IVF treatments after conservative surgery for advanced endometriosis, if patients had good prognosis EFI scores. Furthermore, non-IVF treatments resulted in nearly the same clinical pregnancy results as IVF treatment within 1 year after surgery.

RESUMO

Radiotherapy can be employed as a therapeutic modality alone in the early stages of cancer and is used together with other treatments such as surgery and chemotherapy in more advanced stages. However, exposure to ionizing radiation in association with radiotherapy affects several organs in the head and neck and can give rise to early and late side effects. Exposure to ionizing radiation used in radiotherapy is known to cause cell damage by leading to oxygen stress through the production of free oxygen radicals (such as superoxide radicals, hydroxyl radical, hydrogen peroxide, and singlet oxygen), depending on the total radiation dosage, the fractionation rate, radiosensitivity, and linear energy transfer. The purpose of the present study was to determine the potential protective role of a powerful and highly selective α2-adrenoreceptor agonist with a broad pharmacological spectrum against salivary gland damage induced by ionizing radiation exposure. Forty Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups-control, ionizing radiation, ionizing radiation + dexmedetomidine (100 µg/kg), ionizing radiation + dexmedetomidine (200 µg/kg), and ionizing radiation + amifostine (200 mg/kg). Following exposure to ionizing radiation, we observed necrosis, fibrosis, and vascular congestions in parotid gland epithelial cells. We also observed increases in malondialdehyde (MDA) and cleaved Caspase-3 levels and a decrease in glutathione (GSH). In groups receiving dexmedetomidine, we observed necrotic epithelial cells, fibrosis and vascular congestion in parotid gland tissue, a decrease in MDA levels, and an increase in GSH. Dexmedetomidine may be a promising antioxidant agent for the prevention of oxidative damage following radiation exposure.

RESUMO

Imatinib (IMT) is a tyrosine kinase enzyme inhibitor and extensively used for the treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). A nanostructured lipid carrier system (NLCS) containing IMT was developed by using emulsification-sonication methods. The characterization of the developed formulation was performed in terms of its particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), zeta potential, entrapment efficiency, loading capacity, sterility, syringeability, stability, in vitro release kinetics with mathematical models, cellular uptake studies with flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy and cytotoxicity for CRL-1739 cells. The particle size, PDI, loading capacity and zeta potential of selected NLCS (F16-IMT) were found to be 96.63 ± 1.87 nm, 0.27 ± 0.15, 96.49 ± 1.46% and -32.7 ± 2.48 mV, respectively. F16-IMT was found to be stable, thermodynamic, sterile and syringeable through an 18 gauze needle. The formulation revealed a Korsmeyer-Peppas drug release model of 53% at 8 h, above 90% of cell viability, 23.61 µM of IC50 and induction of apoptosis in CRL-1739 cell lines. In the future, F16-IMT can be employed to treat GISTs. A small amount of IMT loaded into the NLCSs will be better than IMT alone for therapy for GISTs. Consequently, F16-IMT could prove to be useful for effective GIST treatment.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: We aimed to evaluate whether the nasal septum deviation affects the development of sinonasal structures. Patients who had undergone paranasal sinus computed tomography (PNS-CT) imaging due to nasal obstruction were divided into 3 groups according to the septal deviation angle; group I: 0° to 9°, group II: 10° to 15°, and group III: >15°. The features of sinonasal structures were recorded when evaluating PNS-CT. There were totally 234 patients, 119 patients in group I, 68 in group II, and 47 in group III. On the opposite side of the deviation, keros 3 was significantly more in group III ( P < 0.001). Although the incidence of concha bullosa and agger nasi cell were not affected by the degree of deviation ( P > 0.05), the incidence of Haller and Onodi cells were significantly higher in group III ( P < 0.001). In addition, all cells were observed more in the opposite side of the deviation in each group ( P < 0.001). Maxillary sinus retention cysts and hypoplasia of maxillary and frontal sinuses, as an indicator of the low pneumatization of the sinuses, are seen more on the same side of nasal septum deviation, increasing with the degree of deviation increases ( P < 0.001). Nasal septum deviation affects the development of sinonasal structures by affecting the pneumatization. Preoperative PNS-CT evaluation is important in order to be aware of the situations that we may encounter during surgery and to provide adequate treatment.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: While the use of cartilage graft for revision tympanoplasty is quite common, the data on the revision of cartilage tympanoplasty are limited. Our study aims to present the results of our patients who underwent endoscopic butterfly inlay myringoplasty for the revision of cartilage tympanoplasty. METHODS: Demographic data, ear sides, perforation locations, graft success rates and hearing results of the patients who underwent endoscopic butterfly inlay myringoplasty for revision of cartilage tympanoplasty between Sep 2017 and Jan 2020 were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 17 patients with 7 (41%) females and 10 (59%) males were included in our study. Eight of the ears (47%) were right and nine (53%) were left. Perforation locations included ten (59%) anterior, six (35%) inferior, and one (6%) posterior. The graft success rate of our study was 100%. No changes were observed in post-operative air conduction, bone conduction and air-bone gap values compared to the pre-operative period (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Endoscopic butterfly inlay myringoplasty for the revision of cartilage tympanoplasty is considered to be a safe surgical technique with satisfactory anatomical and hearing results.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: New generation Doppler ultrasonography (DUSG) application effects on cochlea and cochlear nucleus (CN) are unclear. We aimed to investigate the effects of new generation DUSG application at different frequencies in prenatal period on cochlea and CN in rats. OBJECTIVE: Twenty-four pregnant female rats were divided into three groups (n = 8). Group 1 was the control group and was not subjected to any treatment. Group 2 was determined as the USG every day (USGED) treatment group. Group 2 has received DUSG application every day from the 4th to 18th day (20 min/15 per day). Group 3 has received DUSG application as "2 days/one dose as every other day application" (USG2D1) from the 4th to 18th day (20 min/8 every other day). Twenty-four female rats were sacrificed in 21 days. Also, 24 pups were sacrificed after two days. First day after born, the cochlear activities of the right ears of all pups were examined using DPOAEs. Second day, neural tissues from CN were evaluated histopathologically and immunohistochemically. RESULTS: There was no any statistical difference between the groups in respect of histopathologically. USGED group showed mild caspase-3 positive neurons and glial cells. However, there was no significant difference between the USGED and other groups (p>.05). Similarly, the rats applied with USG2D1 had mild caspase-3 expression, but no significant difference between the USG2D1 and other groups (p>.05). Differences in DPOAE amplitudes, and therefore in cochlear activity, between the groups were revealed. The decrease in cochlear activity between the groups involved frequencies at 2, 8, 16, and 32 kHz (p<.05). CONCLUSIONS: Multiple administration of new generation DUSG to pregnant rats has not shown harmful effects on the cochlear neural tissue. High frequencies are more sensitive in cochlea to apply DUSG.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Promising studies have been conducted with many substances to reduce the ototoxic effects of cisplatin, but there is no treatment that completely eliminates the ototoxic effect. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of astaxanthin (ASX) as a protective agent against cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-six rats were randomly divided into 6 groups. Group 1 received no drug injections except for anesthetics; group 2 received intraperitoneal (IP) olive oil only for 8 days; group 3 received only IP ASX 75 mg/kg dissolved in olive oil for 8 days; group 4 received a single dose of only IP 16 mg/kg cisplatin on the 5th day; group 5 received 25 mg/kg ASX IP daily for 8 days and a single 16 mg/kg dose of cisplatin on the 5th day; group 6 received 75 mg/kg ASX IP daily for 8 days and a single 16 mg/kg dose of cisplatin on the 5th day. The animals were tested for distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) before and 3 days after cisplatin treatment. The animals in all groups were sacrificed under anesthesia on the 10th day. Before sacrifice, inferior vena cava blood samples were drawn into commercial tubes for biochemical analysis and their cochlea were prepared for histological analysis. RESULTS: The ASX+cisplatin groups demonstrated significantly higher DPOAE thresholds when compared to the cisplatin-only group (p < 0.05). The ASX 25 mg/kg/day+cisplatin group showed a significant increase in total antioxidant capacity compared to the cisplatin-only group, whereas the ASX 75 mg/kg/day+cisplatin group had significantly lower total oxidative stress and oxidative stress index. Histologic results showed that the cortical organ was better preserved in the ASX+cisplatin groups compared to the cisplatin-only group, and the degeneration in the spiral ganglion and inner and outer hair cells was less visible in the ASX groups. CONCLUSIONS: Astaxanthin can protect hearing from cisplatin-induced ototoxicity, prevent cellular degeneration and significantly reduce oxidative stress.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Various agents with various antifungal properties are widely used for otomycosis eradication. However, there is still no consensus on the most effective agent. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate the efficacy of topical 1% isoconazole nitrate cream in the treatment of otomycosis. METHODS: This prospective study included 43 patients who were applied to our outpatient clinic with complaints of ear pain, itching, aural fullness, and hypoacusis, and were diagnosed with unilateral otomycosis. After aspiration and cleaning, the external ear canal was filled with 1% isoconazole nitrate cream using an iv cannula and insulin syringe. Control examinations were performed on the 5th, 10th, 15th, and 20th days. In the follow-up examinations, patients were asked about how many days after the cream administration the pain and itching completely relief and the answers were recorded. RESULTS: In the first control examination of 23 (92%) of 25 patients with pain, it was observed that the pain and otoendoscopic examination findings completely recovered. In the second control, it was found that both pain and otoendoscopic examination findings completely recovered in the remaining 2 patients (25 patients, 100%). 35 patients complained of itching and it was observed that itching and otoendoscopic examination findings completely recovered in 26 patients (75%) in the first control, 5 more patients (31 patients, 88.6%) in the second control, and 2 more patients (33 patients, 94.3%) in the third control examination. CONCLUSION: Isoconazole nitrate cream appears to be an effective and easily applicable agent for the treatment of otomycosis.

RESUMO

The main aim of our study is to evaluate whether the effect of smoking on the auditory system shows gender differences. Another aim is to evaluate whether smoking has any influence on the absorbance of sound. There were 236 volunteers including 90 nonsmokers (42 females and 48 males) and 146 smokers (72 females and 74 males) in the study. Smokers were grouped according to pack-years of smoking as 5 to 10 pack-years, 11 to 20 pack-years, and more than 20 pack-years. Pure tone audiometry and wideband tympanometry were performed in all individuals. Both female and male smokers who consume more than 20 pack-years had significantly higher hearing thresholds at 4 and 6 kHz and significantly lower sound energy absorbance rates at 4, 6, and 8 kHz. Moreover, female smokers with a consumption of 11 to 20 pack-years had significantly higher hearing thresholds at 6 kHz and significantly lower sound energy absorbance rates at 6 and 8 kHz. Smoking causes hearing loss at high frequencies in both females and males, especially in a dose-dependent manner affecting individuals with a consumption of more than 20 pack-years. The sound energy absorbance is significantly reduced at 4, 6, and 8 kHz. In addition, these effects may occur in women with even less exposure.

RESUMO

The aim of current study is to develop new nanostructured lipid carrier systems (NLCSs) containing imatinib mesylate (IMT) and evaluate their targeting efficiency on NIH-3T3 as fibroblast cells and CRL-1739 as gastric adenocarcinoma cells with radiolabeled formulations. Three formulations (F1-IMT, F2-IMT and F3-IMT) were prepared and radiolabeled with 1 mCi/0.1 mL of [99mTc]Tc. The effect of reducing and antioxidant agents on radiolabeling process was evaluated and radiochemical purity of formulations was performed by radio thin-layer radiochromatography (RTLC). The results demonstrated that the radiochemical purity was found to be above 90% for [99mTc]Tc-F1-IMT and [99mTc]Tc-F2-IMT, while radiochemical purity of [99mTc]Tc-F3-IMT was found to be 85.61 ± 2.24%. Also, [99mTc]Tc-F1-IMT and [99mTc]Tc-F2-IMT have better stability in cell medium and saline than [99mTc]Tc-F3-IMT. Targeting efficiency of [99mTc]Tc-F1-IMT and [99mTc]Tc-F2-IMT comparatively evaluated by cell binding studies with [99mTc]NaTcO4 on NIH-3T3 and CRL-1739 cells. The cell binding capacity and targeting/non-targeting cell uptake ratio of these two formulations was found to be higher than [99mTc]NaTcO4 in CRL-1739. It is thought that the knowledge achieved in this study would contribute to using [99mTc]Tc-F1-IMT and [99mTc]Tc F2-IMT as an diagnosis and treatment agents.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prognostic factors that may affect the success in endoscopic cartilage tympanoplasty and determine the outcomes of endoscopic cartilage tympanoplasty. METHODS: This study included 312 patients who underwent transcanal endoscopic type I cartilage tympanoplasty. The effects of sex, the affected side, the size of the perforation, the location of the perforation, the absence of myringosclerosis, external ear canal protrusion, the condition of the contralateral ear, and surgical experience on the rate of graft success and hearing improvement were investigated. RESULTS: The affected side, sex, location of the perforation, myringosclerosis, the condition of contralateral ear, and surgical experience did not significantly affect the surgical success (p > 0.05). However, the size of perforation and ear canal wall protrusion were significantly related to both functional and anatomical success (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Endoscopic transcanal type I cartilage tympanoplasty can be performed with a high anatomical and functional success rate. However, surgeons should be more careful and design a case-specific operation strategy in patients with external ear canal anterior wall protrusion and large perforations.

RESUMO

The clinical impact and accessibility of 99mTc tracers for cancer diagnosis would be greatly enhanced by the availability of a new, simple, and easy labeling process and radiopharmaceuticals. In this study, Technetium-99m-imatinib mesylate ([99mTc]TcIMT) was developed and prepared as a new radiopharmaceutical for breast cancer diagnosis. The effect of critical process parameters on the product quality and stability of [99mTc]TcIMT was investigated using the quality by design concept of the ICH Q8 (Pharmaceutical Development) guideline. [99mTc]TcIMT was subjected to in vitro cell binding studies to determine healthy and cancer cell affinity using HaCaT and MCF-7 cells, respectively. The optimal radiolabeling procedure with 1 mg of IMT, 500 µg of stannous chloride, 0.1 mg of ascorbic acid, and 1mCi 99mTc radioactivity was obtained for [99mTc]TcIMT. The pH of the reaction mixture was adjusted to 10 and allowed to react for 15 min at room temperature. The radiochemical purity of [99mTc]TcIMT was found to be higher than 90% at room temperature up to 6 h. Chromatography analysis revealed >85% [99mTc]TcIMT complex formation with promising stability in saline, cell medium, and serum up to 6 h. The radiolabeled complex showed a higher cell-binding ratio to MCF-7 cells (88.90% ± 3.12) than HaCaT cells (45.64 ± 4.72) when compared to 99mTc. Our findings show that the developed preparation method for [99mTc]TcIMT falls well within the proven acceptable ranges. Applying quality by design (QbD) principles is feasible and worthwhile for the preparation of [99mTc]TcIMT. In conclusion, radiochemical purity, stability, and in vitro cell binding evaluation of the [99mTc]TcIMT complex indicate that the agent can be utilized for imaging of breast cancer cells.

RESUMO

The aim of our study was to obtain wideband tympanometry (WBT) findings in Meniere's disease (MD). It also aimed to evaluate whether the data obtained have diagnostic significance. 21 patients who were followed-up for unilateral Meniere's Disease were evaluated. The ears with Meniere disease were grouped as the MD group and the opposite ears were grouped as the control group. WBT results were recorded as resonance frequency (RF) and frequency-specific absorbance values at 10 different frequencies in the 0.25-8.0 kHz range. Statistical analysis was performed with t test and receiver-operating characteristic analysis. Considering the WBT results, RF was significantly lower in the MD group compared to the control group (p < 0.001). Frequency-specific absorbance values at 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1 kHz were significantly lower in the MD group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). No significant difference was found at 1.5 kHz and above (p > 0.05). For the MD, the RF below 598 Hz was 85.7% sensitive and 76.2% specific, the absorbance at 0.25 kHz below 8% was 66.7% sensitive and 61.9% specific, the absorbance below 17% at 0.5 kHz was 71.4% sensitive and 62.1% specific, the absorbance below 36% at 0.75 kHz was 81% sensitive and 57.8% specific, and the absorbance below 46% at 1 kHz was 71.5% sensitive and 66.7% specific. When MD was compared with intact ears, it was observed that RF was lower, and absorbance decreased in low frequencies. These data is statistically significant, but the sensitivity level is not enough for diagnostic use. Therefore, it is considered as an complementary test for the diagnosis.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Although bilateral same-day tympanoplasty is a faster and more comfortable procedure for patients, it is rarely performed due to its theoretical risks. The present study aims to evaluate the results of patients who underwent bilateral same-day endoscopic tympanoplasty. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 26 patients and 52 ears were evaluated. Postoperative anatomic success rate, pre- and postoperative hearing test results, hearing gains and postoperative complications were recorded. RESULTS: Postoperative anatomic success rate was 92.3% (48/52). Audiological tests revealed the preoperative air-bone gap (ABG) as 19.1 ± 8.8 (7-35) dB and postoperative ABG as 9.8 ± 5.7 (5-25) dB. Postoperative ABG decreased significantly (p: <0.001) and 9.2 ± 4.6 (2-23) dB hearing gain was obtained. We did not observe any significant complications. CONCLUSION: Bilateral same-day endoscopic tympanoplasty is a feasible surgical procedure with good anatomic and functional outcomes, low complication rate and good postoperative patient comfort.
